Frequently Asked Questions

Explore frequently asked questions about the Momentum™ Electric ROV, a large work class electric ROV designed for high‑thrust subsea operations, plug‑and‑play integration, reduced environmental risk, and seamless use with existing Millennium® Plus ROV infrastructure.

The Momentum™ Electric ROV uses electric propulsion and plug-and-play architecture to deliver high thrust, long dive times, and fewer failure points than with traditional hydraulic components.

No. The Momentum™ Electric ROV is designed to be compatible with existing Millennium® ROV installations requiring only an ROV tether retermination to swap between the two ROV systems.

Yes. The Momentum™ Electric ROV is designed for a quick upgrade to existing Millennium® ROV systems by using the existing tether, cage, umbilical, and launch and recovery system (LARS). Control rooms will also be upgraded to provide improved pilot experience.

Our iPEMs enable 1 hour replacement of components and installation of new sensors and tooling without time-consuming rewiring or reconfiguration.

The vehicle’s greater thrust, stability, and situational awareness support operations in challenging conditions such as high current, low visibility, and congested subsea environments. Plug-and-play electrical interfaces and rapid skid exchange increase availability and efficiency for multi-task campaigns. Designed for customers accustomed to Millennium® ROV power, it is well suited for extended-duration dives, environmentally regulated regions, and demanding intervention and IMR work requiring stable station-keeping and precise control for valve operations, hot-stab work, torque tooling, and close-proximity interaction.

The Momentum™ Electric ROV is undergoing continuous endurance testing both in a test tank and in offshore trials from 2024 through 2026. The ROV will be commercially available on an OII vessel in the GOM in 2026.

By minimizing hydraulic components and drawing 45% less power than traditional systems, the Momentum™ Electric ROV reduces vessel emissions, lowers the risk of fluid leaks, and supports compliance with offshore environmental regulations.

Yes. A dedicated BOP Pumping Skid will be available, specifically designed to close BOP rams in full compliance with API 53 (American Petroleum Institute Standard 53) requirements.

The Momentum™ Electric ROV is fully compatible with existing hydraulic cage and tophat style tether management systems (TMSs). However, customers seeking an all-electric solution may request integration with a fully electric cage to align with specific operational or environmental requirements.

The Momentum™ Electric ROV is designed to integrate with the Omnio™ System Tool Changer. However, this tool changer is also compatible with existing hydraulic ROVs for broader operational flexibility.

Yes. A hydraulic power unit (HPU) is included to operate the manipulators and support customer-supplied hydraulic tooling. In future configurations, Omnio™ tooling and electric manipulators will eliminate the need for hydraulics entirely.

Yes. The vehicle is configurable for use with a tophat-style TMS, allowing flexibility in deployment based on customer infrastructure and operational requirements.
