Overview

Oceaneering recently completed the fourth year of a long-term contract to provide inspection services at a nuclear power plant being constructed in the UK. The team’s scope includes onsite x-ray evaluation of welds on reactor liner plates as well as offsite work to inspect stainless steel supports integral to the facility’s structures.

Our Solution

Due to the nature of the operations, the reactor liner plates are constructed of high-grade stainless steel and require containment welds, dictating the requirement for 100% x-ray inspection.

Oceaneering’s 18-person team of skilled radiographers with extensive experience working in the nuclear industry has captured more than 20,000 exposures on site to support the building program and requirements. They have also captured an additional 10,000 exposures as part of offsite work, inspecting support frames at a local fabrication shop prior to them being shipped and installed.

The team serves as the first line of interpretation, reviewing the inspection data for irregular profiles, defects, and anomalies before sharing the findings for further examination by the asset owner and other parties.

Benefits

With more than 35 years of experience delivering inspection services to the nuclear industry, our teams are trusted as industry leaders in the delivery of quality, accurate, and timely data.

A thorough understanding of client and regulatory requirements ensures work is carried out as planned while providing the flexibility necessary in complex programs.

In addition to delivering the x-ray inspection as required, our teams have also supported the client with other general non-destructive testing (NDT) methods on site including dye penetrant testing, gamma ray, and ultrasonic examination as well as contributing to developing inspection methodologies and approaches in scenarios that dictate inventive solutions.

The inspection team is anticipated to remain on site through commissioning of the nuclear power plant in 2028. The client has been exceptionally happy with the team’s performance and is likely to shift their expertise to another planned nuclear facility upon completion of the current work scope.
