Overview
In 2025, we were contracted by a major energy client to perform a comprehensive out-of-straightness survey at a greenfield block offshore West Africa.
The project required establishing a precise baseline for nearly 293 kilometers of newly installed pipelines, ranging from 6 to 30 inches in diameter, and spanning water depths from 30 meters to almost 3,000 meters. Our scope included not only the main survey, but also mattress and buoy installation, electrical flying lead installation, and integration of third-party data to create a complete field reference source for future use.
Our Solution
We delivered an integrated solution that combined advanced positioning technology, robust survey equipment, and a hybrid approach to data processing.
Central to our approach was the deployment of the Kongsberg HAIN 7000 INS/DVL/USBL positioning system, which was specifically chosen for its compatibility with the vessel’s USBL and its ability to meet exceptionally tight positional tolerances, less than three meters at a water depth of 2,800 meters. The project featured one of the widest water depth ranges our team has ever surveyed, from as shallow as 30 meters to nearly 3000 meters, requiring both deepwater and shallow water operations and presenting unique technical challenges. The surveyed field exhibited dramatic seabed variances, including steep shelves, sudden depth changes, and complex terrain that required careful navigation and precise mapping throughout the survey operations.
The Kongsberg HAIN system itself was new to our operations, with fewer than five units available globally. Our team worked closely with the manufacturer throughout the project, maintaining constant communication to fine-tune and optimize the system for deepwater use and to ensure accurate data collection even in the most demanding conditions.
We adopted a hybrid data processing model, combining the expertise of offshore and onshore personnel to efficiently manage and process over 4,000 hours of survey data collected by the system mounted on our Magnum ROV. We produced a wide range of deliverables for the client.
Value Delivered
Our approach provided the client with a reliable baseline for future pipeline inspections, enabling proactive asset management and rapid identification of any future out-of-straightness events.
By integrating third-party installation data and customizing the final report to serve as a comprehensive field reference, we made it easier for the client to access critical information and plan future surveys. The use of advanced positioning technology and efficient data processing minimized vessel time, reduced operational costs, and ensured the project was completed within the client’s schedule.
