Overview

In March 2022, Oceaneering's Maintenance and Reliability Solutions team commenced a 20-month project to review and improve the maintenance program for a jack-up drilling rig for a European client.

The rig marked the client’s first operatorship of a drilling rig in the Norwegian North Sea and prompted an in-depth review and optimization of the existing maintenance program, aiming to achieve the highest possible standard to ensure the safety, operability, and maximized uptime of the rig.

Faced with a lack of in-house resources to complete the comprehensive evaluation they required, the client leveraged Oceaneering’s decades of expertise and the experience of a team of maintenance engineers to lead the critical aspects of the project. This strategic step not only enabled a detailed review of the maintenance program but also ensured an independent perspective that significantly enhanced the project's scope and quality.

Our Results

Data Assessment and Gap Analysis: The initial phase, spanning three months, involved a meticulous review of the existing data against current performance standards and local Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) compliance requirements. This process highlighted several key issues requiring remedial work to ensure compliance requirements were met.

Implementation: To address the issues found within the maintenance program, the Oceaneering engineers targeted key areas of improvement including:

Asset Register Updates

To set the foundations of the refreshed maintenance program, the 80,000 tags asset register received a significant overhaul. This encompassed:

  • Validation of all tags against technical drawings and documentation.
  • Restructuring of the technical tag hierarchy.
  • Adoption of ISO equipment classes.
  • Criticality (Classification) updates.

Performance Standards Compliance

Identification of the validated tags against the specific compliance requirements and assigning appropriate assurance tasks to ensure operational integrity.

Maintenance Plan Content

Identifying and rectifying job plan inconsistencies and gaps, making the routine maintenance tasks more consistent and accurate while also removing unnecessary work.

Maintenance Schedule Optimization

Streamlining existing maintenance schedules for efficient work execution, to optimize planned maintenance costs and reduce downtime.

Collaboration with Subject Matter Experts

To ensure the highest level of technical accuracy throughout the project, our team worked alongside various Subject Matter Experts within the client’s organization, leveraging their specialist knowledge for rig-specific equipment (mud pumps, blow out preventer, etc.) and enabling us to develop maintenance routines that reflected actual operating requirements.

CMMS Upgrade

The project team also supported the client’s adoption of their new Computerized Maintenance Management System, facilitated by a third-party software provider. Oceaneering's team worked closely with the provider to ensure that the software platform was configured to effectively incorporate the suggested data inputs.

Results

The project resulted in a comprehensive maintenance management program, meticulously tailored to meet the highest regulatory standards and best practices related to operational excellence, a critical requirement to achieve approval from Norway’s Petroleum Safety Administration (PSA).

The overhaul of the maintenance program streamlined processes by eliminating unnecessary tasks, reducing operational costs and time to enhance overall productivity. The review and restructuring of the asset register and maintenance plans also provided the client with a clear, logical, and correct list of tags, along with significantly reducing the time and effort required for maintenance operations.
