In late 2023, a client with a fixed concrete platform in North America contacted Oceaneering seeking a rapid-response solution to address their urgent need for internal pipe inspection.
The client was experiencing low flow volumes through the pipeline and needed an expedited method of identifying the root cause and suggestions on how to remediate the issue.
The 209-meter-long pipeline section in question had extraordinarily complex geometry with multiple elbows and turns and the added complexity of non-ferrous construction of varying diameters ranging from 38 inches down to 18 inches. Not only did the client need to confirm and remediate the issue, but they also needed to complete all inspection activity during a scheduled two-week maintenance period when the asset was offline.
The Oceaneering team used drawings provided by the client to identify key areas for targeted inspection.
After reviewing all variables, they developed a solution that could address 73% of the 209-meter length, giving the client the most comprehensive data possible within their tight timeline.
The approach was divided between two methods: a modified drop camera deployed topside, and an ROV-based solution deployed through the 18-inch port included in the lower section. The drop camera was engineered using a modified crawler system, making it suitable for use in the titanium pipeline. Primary and secondary set-ups were deployed offshore with an Oceaneering team to an already-chartered vessel to complete the inspection scope.
The dual inspection method was used to successfully capture video and stills of the extreme build up within the pipeline within the two-week shutdown window.
While the team was unable to inspect the pipeline’s many bends, we provided the client with the information necessary to make informed decisions on how to remediate and restore flow across production.
Successful provision of an inspection methodology to solve the client’s issue not only demonstrated ingenuity and our capability to respond quickly, but answered a challenge no other vendor was willing to take on. The site’s water depth, composition of the pipeline, and complex geometry eliminated many readily available options and demanded an innovative, bespoke solution.
