While already at an advanced stage in the development of an innovative long-term resident ROV system, Oceaneering recent began work with Equinor on a pilot project to design a shorter-duration resident vehicle. Unsurprisingly, the two vehicles are completely different.

Robotic systems are moving closer toward being able to “live” in subsea docking stations, as permanently installed subsea resident vehicles.

The ROV world is changing. As subsea equipment suppliers look to the next generation of technology, the distinction between remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) – the industry’s staple robotic helpers since the late 70s – and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) is becoming increasingly difficult to discern.
