In late 2023, Oceaneering’s Maintenance and Reliability Solutions team was tasked with an initiative to establish a comprehensive condition monitoring regime for a Floating Storage Unit (FSU). The FSU supports a production platform located in the North Sea, and the resulting 18-month project included fact-finding, tendering, and coordination with client subject matter experts to create a condition monitoring program tailored to meet the FSU’s specific operational needs.
To determine the best overall solution, the project commenced with the reliability engineers embedded with the client using equipment criticality to complete a thorough gap analysis of the FSU systems. Due to its crucial role in supporting the field’s production, the team opted to implement both online and offline monitoring programs for the FSU, equivalent to those already in place on the main production platform.
Development of Online and Offline Monitoring Programs
Online Monitoring
A detailed review of the entire FSU plant by the team found existing hard-wired sensors relating to key operational parameters including pressure, temperature, and vibration were not being utilized. This discovery facilitated the cost-effective establishment of an online monitoring program, with the sensor data integrated into the client’s existing central condition monitoring system. This provided their operational team with the best opportunity to anticipate and mitigate any potential failures prior to them affecting production.
Offline Monitoring
Due to the absence of hard-wired sensors on some of the FSU’s critical equipment, an offline monitoring program was created with baseline data collected. Core crew members were then trained to collect and upload readings periodically, to allow analysis by the client’s central team. To reduce implementation costs, the same monitoring vendor was used for the FSU’s offline program as had been used for the platform, also ensuring consistency of monitoring practices across the two facilities.
The establishment of online and offline monitoring programs on the FSU has significantly enhanced data accessibility and utilization, granting stakeholders easy access to vital information for better decision making.
This change has also facilitated the adoption of a predictive maintenance strategy for the monitored equipment, enabling the early detection of potential failures and minimizing downtime.
In addition to our embedded operational reliability support, Oceaneering has also delivered targeted engineering scopes for the platform and FSU, including structural and vibration-related inspection services to address specific issues. Combined, our work with the client highlights Oceaneering's ability to deliver a broad range of tailored engineering solutions that drive substantial improvements in operational reliability and efficiency.
