An oil and gas operator recently expanded its operations into the UK North Sea for the first time with the construction of a brand-new offshore facility.
This expansion brought to light a critical challenge: the company's standard preventative maintenance plans, while successful and adequate in other regions, were not always in line with the UK's stringent Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations and best practices. The operator turned to Oceaneering’s Lösungen für Wartung und Zuverlässigkeit team for support.
The primary challenge was the need to complete a gap analysis between the operator’s existing corporate maintenance plans used by the new facility with the often more rigorous requirements set forth by UK HSE regulations. The work instruction language in the corporate maintenance plans was typically more generic than equivalent UK work instructions, and at times frequencies did not align. With over 1,800 maintenance plans used across multiple equipment types, it required systematic scrutiny, review, and update which is not only vast but critical.
To address these challenges, the team is actively completing an intensive and thorough review of all preventative maintenance plans used by the facility, prioritizing those relating to safety-critical elements.
This includes a gap analysis to identify discrepancies or conflicts between current work instruction text, plan frequencies, and UK regulatory requirements. Where required, this is followed by an update of the work instructions to enrich the content and make it more specific, compliant, and detailed for UK operations. Plan frequencies are also realigned where necessary.
Integral to the success of the ongoing project is regular stakeholder engagement and collaboration with equipment specialists and UK regulatory experts who provide the team with specialized knowledge and insights into requirements for the revised maintenance plans.
The comprehensive review and update process by Oceaneering’s Maintenance and Reliability Solutions team has led to the development of robust maintenance plans that not only comply with UK HSE regulations but also set a new standard for maintenance excellence for the operator. These updated plans, while initially applied to the UK facility, have the potential to be adopted across similar facility types within the company's global portfolio, enhancing safety and operational efficiency on a wider scale.
