In Q3 2023, Oceaneering was challenged to provide special periodic survey (SPS) services to a leading drilling company in an extremely short maintenance window between wells.
The client was interested in exploring all options that would help them address the requirements for SPS inspection while adhering to their existing contracts. They were focused on identifying the best approach to execute the scope efficiently while reducing their contract day rate costs.
To address this challenge, our teams explored all options and presented the client with three viable solutions.
The first involved navigating around their schedule, allowing them to execute the SPS while still performing operationally required work. The second option involved chartering another navio e ROV to assist in compressing the required timeline for completing the SPS. Lastly, the third option was to adhere to the standard execution process using the vessel’s incumbent ROV system but move the work forward in Oceaneering’s schedule.
Each of the models evaluated the feasibility and estimated costs of each scenario and gave the client a clear picture of the benefits and considerations associated with each option.
After careful consideration, the client decided to proceed with the traditional execution of the SPS; however, having knowledge of the alternative scenarios played a crucial role in negotiations with their end client.
They negotiated a schedule where we could leverage simultaneous operations (SIMOPs) to complete cleaning and inspection scopes at night, optimizing the process and increasing the scheduling efficiency.
The SPS scope was complete in just under seven days, sooner than the initial estimation of seven to nine days. This not only helped the client maintain their modified schedule, but provided cost efficiency, lowered HSE exposure, and reduced carbon footprint associated with the operations. The SPS was successfully completed and enabled the vessel to remain in-service until the next required inspection scopes.
Our ability to leverage extensive expertise to navigate the various scenarios that would enable the client to meet their objectives was pivotal to them achieving operational goals and utilizing the available maintenance window while best managing expenditure related to day rate. The project demonstrated our commitment to supporting our client’s diverse and changing needs with solutions that are tailored, efficient, and industry leading.
