Visión general

A customer faced two common material handling challenges at their industrial manufacturing facility and sought a method to improve operational efficiency.

Specifically, operations were affected by:

  • Limited dock space for finished goods staging
  • Production line interruptions caused by pallet pickup constraints

They needed a way to maximize the use of available floor space while reducing operator involvement in material movement. Traditional automated guided vehicle (AGV) workflows that rely on fixed pickup and drop-off locations would not provide the flexibility needed to meet their operational goals.

Nuestra solución

To help address these challenges, the facility implemented MaxMover’s Pallet Sniffing capability, a standard feature of the MaxMover system that was configured on site to support the customer’s specific material handling requirements.

Initially planned for finished goods staging only, the customer quickly recognized additional opportunities to use the capability for production-line pallet collection.

Pallet Sniffing enables the MaxMover vehicle to intelligently identify:

  • The next available location within a designated drop-off lane for pallet placement
  • The next available pallet for retrieval in a designated pick-up lane

Rather than requiring pallets to be placed in a single fixed location, they can be placed or staged anywhere within a defined lane, enabling the MaxMover to automatically determine the best pickup and drop-off locations.

During implementation, Oceaneering’s mobile robotics specialists worked with the customer to identify optimal pickup locations and staging lanes based on existing workflows and available floor space. The solution required no modifications to pallets and no integration with the customer’s warehouse management software. Instead, a simple mission-trigger approach enabled MaxMover to automate transport tasks while fitting seamlessly into existing operations.

After seeing the benefits of Pallet Sniffing in finished goods staging, the customer chose to expand the capability to production-line pallet collection. By eliminating the need for fixed pickup and drop-off locations, the solution supported more flexible, space-efficient material handling and enabled the customer to address both operational challenges.

High-Density Finished Goods Staging

The customer's shipping dock area had limited available space but needed to accommodate a large volume of finished goods before forklift operators loaded them into outbound trailers.

Warehouse personnel previously used manual pallet jacks to position pallets for loading, making efficient use of the available staging area critical.

Our team created three dedicated drop-off lanes within the dock area for heavy-, medium-, and light-weight pallet loads. This enabled MaxMover to use Pallet Sniffing to automatically identify the next available position within the appropriate lane and place incoming pallets accordingly.

This allowed pallets to be:

  • Stored in a highly organized configuration
  • Packed densely with only inches of separation between them to maximize available floor space
  • Staged efficiently for manual transfer into shipping trailers

Without requiring fixed drop locations, the dock area effectively became a dynamic storage zone capable of holding significantly more inventory while maintaining organization and accessibility.

The facility was able to maximize storage density in a constrained dock area, increasing staging capacity and improving shipping readiness without expanding floor space.

Flexible Production Line Material Transfer

The second challenge involved finished product transfer from the production line.

The second challenge involved transferring finished product pallets away from the production line. Operators used manual pallet jacks to move completed pallets into collection areas, where they would typically wait for additional personnel to transport them to the dock. This process created delays, introduced unnecessary handling steps, and could interrupt normal production activities.

Using Pallet Sniffing, the team established dedicated pickup lanes at six of the facility’s eight production locations. Each lane could hold up to three pallets simultaneously, creating buffer capacity for higher-volume production lines.

Operators simply used a pallet jack to place completed pallets anywhere within the designated floor-marked lane. MaxMover automatically identified the next pallet requiring transport and retrieved it without requiring operators to position pallets at a fixed location or wait for collection before continuing production.

The production team gained:

  • Increased operational flexibility and greater production continuity
  • Reduced manual pallet handling
  • Fewer workflow interruptions

Most importantly, operators could remain focused on production activities rather than material transport logistics.

Value Delivered

The implementation delivered immediate benefits across both warehouse and production operations.

By replacing fixed-location workflows with dynamic staging lanes, the facility increased storage density within a constrained dock area, enabling more finished goods to be staged without requiring additional floor space. Dedicated heavy-, medium-, and light-load staging lanes helped maximize available dock capacity while maintaining organized, accessible pallet storage.

On the production floor, operators no longer needed to wait for completed pallets to be collected before continuing work. By establishing pickup lanes at six production locations, MaxMover enabled finished goods to be staged and retrieved dynamically, helping maintain continuous production flow while reducing unnecessary material handling.

MaxMover consistently kept pace with production demand, completing transport assignments quickly enough to return to its charging station and await the next task. Material transport was no longer a workflow bottleneck, allowing personnel to remain focused on higher-value activities while routine pallet movement was managed automatically.

The result was smoother material flow, fewer interruptions, and greater operational flexibility across the facility. Because the solution leveraged existing workflows without requiring pallet modifications or warehouse management system integration, it was implemented with minimal disruption while delivering immediate operational benefits.

Just as importantly, the solution created a scalable foundation for future growth. As production requirements evolve, the facility can continue optimizing material handling workflows and increasing throughput without significant infrastructure changes or additional staging space.

Increased Storage Density: Enabled high-density pallet staging within existing dock space, increasing capacity without expanding the facility footprint.

Reduced Production Interruptions: Allowed operators to continue production without waiting for pallet collection or manually coordinating pallet transfers.

Improved Material Flow: Automated pallet retrieval and transport to eliminate material handling bottlenecks and support continuous operations.

Greater Operational Flexibility: Removed the need for fixed pickup and drop-off locations, allowing pallets to be staged dynamically based on operational requirements.

Scalable Automation: Provided a flexible automation platform that can adapt to future production growth without major facility modifications.

Every manufacturing operation faces unique material handling challenges. Whether the goal is improving the use of available space, enabling employees to focus on higher-value tasks, increasing throughput, or improving workflow flexibility, intelligent automation can create measurable operational benefits.

MaxMover’s Pallet Sniffing capability is just one example of how advanced AGV material transportation solutions can help facilities operate more efficiently while empowering their workforce to focus on value-added activities.
