Bill Bryson Otech

Bill Bryson is the Deputy Director of Business Development for Oceaneering Technologies (OTECH), a segment of Oceaneering International.

He joined the company in June 2022 after serving in the defense and aerospace sectors. Prior to that, Bill retired from the U.S. Army following 23 years of service.

During his military career, he and his wife, Monica, moved 14 times across seven states, with two tours in Germany for six years. Their children, Jenifer and Bill Jr., were born in Stuttgart, Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany).

Bill joined the Army ROTC program at Loyola University Maryland and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Armor/Cavalry branch in October 1976. His first tour was to Fort Knox in Kentucky to attend Armor Officer Basic Course training, followed by three years in Germany in a tank battalion and then a cavalry troop.

“I volunteered for flight training after completing the Armor Officer Advanced Course, thinking I would no longer have to be cold and wet all the time while deployed. I was wrong. You can fly when you’re cold and wet in the Army—I’m pretty sure it’s mandatory.”

Bill Bryson Veteran SpotlightAfter a quick 12-month flight training program at Fort Rucker in Alabama, he was rated in TH-55 Osage, UH-1H Huey, OH-58A/C Kiowa, and AH-1 G/S/ECAS/FM Cobra helicopters. Over the years, he transitioned to the UH-60A Blackhawk and the T-42 Cochise, a fixed-wing trainer. Bill mostly flew Hueys and Cobras throughout his military career, preferring the Cobra by far.

“I piloted or flew in four continents in some of the worst weather imaginable—remember, there is a requirement to be cold and wet while flying an Army helicopter.”

He also performed lead-the-fleet developmental test pilot flying in non-standard AH-1FM Cobras.

“That was a fun time,” he said. “You’re given the keys to a Cobra –yes, they have keys–, a credit card, and told not to come back until you have flown four to eight hours.”

His most exciting, yet nerve-wracking tour, was in Fulda, West Germany.

“I was assigned to the 4th Squadron 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment conducting 24/7 aerial surveillance along the East-West German border when the Berlin Wall came down.”

Bill Bryson and WifeBill ended his Army career in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, serving as the XVIII Airborne Corps Deputy Aviation Officer. He spent a lot of time jumping out of airplanes from 800 feet at night with full combat loads.

“Sounds fun until you have a full stop with the ground,” he explained. “I realized I was getting too old for this business. I also realized I had flown in a C-130 and C-17 many times, but never landed in either—very peculiar.”

In February 1999, Bill retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel.

“It was difficult transitioning to civilian life and leaving my brotherhood of friends behind, but I soon learned the brotherhood follows you for a lifetime.”

Like many veterans, he found the skills he learned in the Army are directly transferable to civilian life.

“Leadership, management, strategic planning, critical thinking, and professional relationship development are skills that apply to almost everything you do in life,” he shared.

Upon joining Oceaneering, Bill discovered its core values closely aligned with Army values.

  • Do Things Right—Integrity
  • Solve Complex Problems—Personal Courage
  • Grow Together—Loyalty, Respect, Selfless Service
  • Outperform Expectations—Duty
  • Own the Challenge—Honor

“You learn these values, you live these values, and these values become your values. Always do what is right, especially when nobody is looking.”

Bill did, however, acquire some skills in the Army that don’t translate to civilian life. “I learned how to milk a cow in a German barn during a NATO deployment with the Dutch Army in 1977,” he said. “I still haven’t found a need to put that on my resume.”

Company page Since our founding in the early 1960s, Oceaneering has expanded and grown globally to service several industries such as the offshore energy industry, defense, entertainment, material handling, aerospace, science, and renewable energy industries. In 1964, Mike Hughes and Johnny Johnson formed a Gulf of Mexico diving company called World Wide Divers. The company grew in response to increasing demand for their services and in 1969 merged with two other diving companies to form Oceaneering International, Inc. To solve the toughest challenges, we do things differently, creatively, and smarter. As your trusted partner, our unmatched experience and truly innovative portfolio of technologies and solutions give us the flexibility to adapt and evolve, regardless of market conditions. Our mission is to solve the unsolvable. We thrive by creating industry-changing technically creative solutions for the most complex operational challenges under water, on land, and in space. Our five core values establish a common culture and demonstrate what is most important for us as a company. Since the beginning, the company has transformed from a small regional diving company into a global provider of engineered products and services. Today, we develop products and services for use throughout the lifecycle of an offshore oilfield, from drilling to decommissioning. We operate the world's premier fleet of work class ROVs. Additionally, we are a leader in offshore oilfield maintenance services, umbilicals, subsea hardware, and tooling. We also serve the aerospace, defense, and theme park industries. Underpinning everything we do, safety is not only the foundation of our core values, but it is vital to our unmatched performance record and company culture. The industries we serve are as diverse as they are complex. Whether we are engineering deepwater umbilicals or developing robotics for aerospace applications, the safety and health of our employees, vendors, and customers is an integral part of our day-to-day business. If we are working, then our responsibility is to be working safely. Since our inception in 1964, we have placed a high value on employee safety—from diving services and subsea inspection to vessel-based installation operations. We have and will continue to evolve not only our health, safety, and environmental (HSE) processes, but those of the industries in which we work. Although we have been fatality-free since 1999, our HSE journey goes beyond statistics. As our portfolio of services has grown, we have continued to prioritize and advance our approach to HSE.
