Oceaneering Remotely Operated Survey Operations

August 30, 2021 – Houston, Texas – Oceaneering International, Inc. (“Oceaneering”) is proud to announce that its Remotely Operated Survey (ROS) solution has been chosen as a finalist for the Best Exploration Technology category at the 2021 World Oil Awards.

Numerous entries were received for each of the World Oil Awards’ 18 categories and a select number of finalists were chosen by an independent panel composed of industry leaders.

For Rig Positioning, Oceaneering’s ROS solution eliminates the need to re-mobilize survey equipment and personnel for subsequent rig moves. Surveyors can operate from a dedicated Onshore Remote Operations Center (OROC) to communicate and coordinate with rig personnel and company representatives during rig move operations.

ROS can be used to execute exploration, development, re-latch and re-spud, plugging and abandonment drilling activities, and FPSO hookup. ROS allows for remote inertial jumper metrologies, remote inertial marker buoy sets, and remote monitoring of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCPs) data.

Reliable data and communications between the rig/vessel and OROC are the backbone of ROS. The required bandwidth is determined by project scope, and most operations can be run with as little as 256 kbps of bandwidth on the rig or vessel’s existing internet access.

Eric Smith, Director of Oceaneering Survey Services, said, “It is an honor to be selected as a finalist for our ROS solution. Our customers have witnessed the value ROS demonstrates from reducing safety risks to personnel, expanding collaboration for fast decision-making, while delivering cost efficiency and lower carbon emissions. Remote operations have enabled operators to rethink the way they conduct work, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Oceaneering ROS surpassed a milestone of 150,000 hours of successful operations in 2020 and has conducted over 110 Rig Positioning projects. Oceaneering has been at the forefront of remote operations since 2004.

The winners of this year’s awards will be announced at the Houstonian Hotel on October 14 in Houston, Texas.
