History of the GoM
The U.S. GoM stretches from the eastern part of the coast of Texas to the western coast of Florida. The area is split into three regions: Central, Eastern and Western. The area has five major producing zones of significant size, ranging from the mature Plio-Pleistocene and Upper Miocene plays to the frontier Paleogene and Jurassic plays.
Unlike the shallower waters of the Gulf of Mexico (known as Shelf), reservoirs in deepwater GoM are largely oil-prone. Deepwater GoM is regarded as a favorable area for investment due to the attractive U.S. fiscal regime, low political risk, established infrastructure and growth opportunities in emerging plays. But, deepwater GoM remains a high operating cost region where intensive capital investment is required to succeed. It has also become an integral part of the U.S. energy picture. In 2018, we expect deepwater GoM to account for approximately 15% of the U.S. crude oil production and 4% of natural gas production.
