OSS has over 30,000 square feet of manufacturing, test, assembly and high-bay work areas. Our capabilities and facilities include: a flight certified precision machine shop, a flight certified “softgoods” shop (sewn products), a 300,000 certified clean room, a prototype shop, electronics fabrication and assembly, welding, sheet metal tools, and mechanical system assembly. We work with materials ranging from exotic metal alloys to complex fabrics and composites, and with material processes ranging from anodizing to space qualified dry-film lubricants. We are recognized by our Customers for our responsive service and ability to quickly produce spaceflight hardware and electro-mechanical systems, multi-layer fabric layups, prototypes, mockups, and commercial products for the bio-tech industry.
Precision Machine Shop
OSS’ precision machine shop fabrication and assembly areas total approximately 10,000 square feet. Our capacity includes manual and CNC mills and lathes, machining centers (mills and lathes), metal finishing, TIG, spot, and traditional welding, and painting. We work with materials ranging from exotic metal alloys (high strength steels, titanium, etc.) to plastics and composites. CNC tool path instructions can be created using conversational or NC programming, or directly from Pro/E part models downloaded from the Pro/E modeling environment using Pro-Manufacturing CAM software. Model changes can be quickly updated by regenerating the tool path.
Softgoods
Softgoods fabrication includes fabric and insulation products that are adhesively bonded, heat-sealed, or produced on sewing machines. We have a variety of specialized equipment that enables us to take a drawing or a pattern plotted out on Mylar sheets and see it through to production.
The primary softgoods fabrication area is approximately 10,000 square feet. Equipment includes over 25 sewing machines, waterproofing equipment, heat sealers, curing (vacuum) ovens, a class 300,000 clean room, and vacuum systems. Softgood products such as thermal protection systems, multi-layer insulation, clothing items, tethers, and storage containers (“cargo bags”) are routinely sewn and assembled in this facility. Everything from synthetic fabrics to high temperature ceramic materials can be processed. Environmental systems provide for safe handling of materials composed of ceramic, carbon, and glass fibers as well as volatile chemicals.
Electronics
OSS uses ORCAD Capture and Layout for PC board schematics and to generate Gerber files for PC board fabrication. We use PSPICE to simulate electrical circuit performance under steady state and transient conditions. Fabrication capacity includes solder station and surface mount assembly and re-work station, NASA certified ESD workstations and technicians for wire harness assembly and soldering, data acquisition systems, logic analyzers, digital volt meters, and OSC scopes.
