Oceaneering International, Inc. (OII) is a recognized leader in designing and building remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) with a world wide fleet of over 125 ROVs. OTECH, a division of OII, fielded the ACRS K-Seriesas a work-class ROV purpose-designed for deep sub-sea fiber optic cable burial and retrieval. The ACRS K-1 (K1) maximizes the technology and experience gained from over three decades of designing, manufacturing, and fielding sub-sea systems. The K-1 was designed for reliability, maintainability, and an aggressive operational tempo in deep water cable burial.
The K-1 is a 400 HP work-class cable maintenance vehicle. The system consists of a free-flying ROV with a detachable jetting skid capable of operating in depths up to 3000 msw (9,842 fsw) and cable burial up to 1 meter in depth. The K-1 is equipped with dual manipulators and a host of tooling packages common to cable maintenance operations. It employs a microprocessor-based PC 104 telemetry system to minimize maintenance, decrease set-up time, simplify troubleshooting, and provide additional automatic control functions. Fiber optics are used as the primary transmission link for all video signals between the vehicle and the surface control console, providing the finest quality video available in ROV technology.
Throughout the development of the ACRS K-Series ROVs, special attention was paid to EPA, Coast Guard, Navy, and ABS standards. From ABS-witnessed load tests to a hydraulic system designed to run with environmentally friendly hydraulic fluid, a philosophy of adapting proven technology to emerging requirements enabled OTECH to push the operational envelope while maintaining expectations for quality and value.
